March 2009:
"Making Fitness a Part of Daily Life"
Yes, it is possible to improve personal fitness while juggling all the components of our frenzied lives, according to March speaker Dave Thielen, Metropolitan Health and Wellness Director for the Cedar Rapids YMCA. Dave offered a number of suggestions for creating a healthier lifestyle, including:
- Set small goals for improving your fitness (like walking a few minutes a day) and build on them gradually, celebrating your achievements along the way.
- Keep fitness fun. Do something you like or join a class.
- Work out with a friend or partner to add accountability, support, diversion and new ideas to your fitness routine.
- Be patient with yourself. It takes eight to 10 weeks to achieve a new level of fitness.
- Keep records of your activities (miles, minutes), weight, heart rate, body fat or other metrics to help demonstrate your progress
In terms of nutrition, remember the simple rule: Calories in, calories out. If you consume fewer calories, burn more, or both, you will lose weight (or at least body fat). As much as possible, avoid simple sugars and replace them with energy-producing complex carbohydrates.
If you spend much of your life in an office, as most of us do, remember to take the stairs whenever possible, park farther from the door, stand up and stretch often during the day, bring your lunch instead of eating out, eat healthy snacks throughout the day (no donuts!), and reduce portions at meal times - leaving you a little extra time for a walk.
Two Programs to Benefit the
Associates of CRPRA
Bring a Guest and Win a Prize!
The April 2009 meeting is your last chance to bring a friend
or colleague who has never attended a CRPRA meeting, or someone who has not attended a CRPRA meeting for
two or more years, and have your name added to a drawing for a $50
Community Gift Certificate to be awarded at our May meeting. There
is no limit to the number of guests you may bring along in any
month, but please be sure your guests have a reservation for the
meeting.
Networking/Information Table
A table will
be provided outside the meeting room each month where you can provide any
printed materials about events or products you wish to share. Be
sure to arrive a little early to place your items on the table. We
ask that printed items now be placed on this table, rather than on
the dining tables. At the end of the meeting, please pick up and
take with you any items that may be left. Our hope is that this will
reduce the amount of paper we need to
clean up and recycle at the end of our meetings.
