May 2010 - “Raising a Glass to the Entrepreneurial Spirit”

CRPRA ended its 2009-2010 season with a visit from Levi Wyant, one of several family members who own and operate Fireside Winery near Marengo, Iowa. Wyant described the resurgence of the Iowa wine industry in general and his family’s wine and hospitality venture in particular. His parents, who own a 100-year-old family farm, conceived of the winery as a way to provide an additional source of income for future generations and preserve the family farm, spurring the creation of a 12-acre vineyard in 2007.

In a truly collaborative enterprise led by an agronomist brother-in-law who has become a talented wine-maker, Fireside today produces 16 different wines, about 30 percent of them using grapes from Fireside’s vineyard and the rest using varietals from California, New York and other grape-growing regions. One of the company’s wines – Hearthstone – won a prestigious national award only three months after it was introduced, and Fireside wines have developed a devoted following throughout Eastern Iowa and beyond. Just as importantly, the Wyants have created a beautiful winery venue in a panoramic rural setting that attracts hundreds of visitors who come to taste Fireside wines and enjoy food and entertainment throughout the summer months. Fireside wines can also be found at area farmers’ markets and in local grocery stores..

To learn more about Fireside and its highly successful branding and marketing effort, check out the company’s web site at www.firesidewinery.com.

“No, I don't think a 68-year-old copywriter...can write with the kids. That he's as creative. That he's as fresh. But he may be a better surgeon. His ad may not be quite as fresh and glowing as the Madison Ave. fraternity would like to see it be, and yet he might write an ad that will produce five times the sales. And that's the name of the game, isn't it?”

- Rosser Reeves,
American advertising executive and
pioneer of television advertising

Donate a door prize - Get free face time!

We've said it before and we'll say it again: We love door prizes! Having door prizes makes our meetings that much more enjoyable and your business or organization gets great exposure when you stand up to briefly explain your prize donation; for example, some chocolate.

Door prizes can be any items such as coffee mugs, notebooks, candles and the ever-popular food items (especially chocolate!), etc.

We’ll draw names each month and hand out the door prizes and spotlight the businesses and individuals who donated. It’s a win-win situation for everyone! To donate an item, please contact any CRPRA steering committee member when you arrive at a meeting.

Thank you for helping to make each CRPRA meeting a fun event!
