April 2009: "World-Class Yet Family-Friendly: The Story of the Marion Arts Fest"

Marion Arts Fest Director Deb Bailey and Campbell-Steele Gallery owners Priscilla and Craig Steele shared the story of the nationally recognized Marion Arts Fest, now in its 17th year. At a time when mediocre arts festivals were plentiful, the festival's founders committed themselves to creating a high-quality juried event that would provide value for artists and enjoyment for the community. Capitalizing on its ideal location in Marion Square Park, strong community partnerships, and the benefit of a national application and peer review system, the event has continued to build visibility in the arts community and draw a growing number of patrons - as many as 16,000 last year.

Today the relatively intimate 50-artist show annually attracts more than 300 applications from artists around the U.S. and Canada who appreciate the superb opportunity to showcase and sell their art. At the same time, the event remains free to the public and involves young community artists in projects such as the Empty Bowls Project to raise funds for area food banks and the Art in the Depot public art project. If you'd like to feast on the beauty and variety of offerings at this year's Marion Arts Fest, mark Saturday, May 16, on your calendar and plan to spend a few hours in the park.

Programs to Benefit the Associates of CRPRA:

The "Bring A Guest" $50 Drawing is Finally Here!
If you've brought a friend to previous CRPRA meetings this season and completed the necessary paperwork, your name has been entered into the drawing for a $50 Community Gift Certificate. We'll be drawing the big winner at the May meeting! Don't miss this exciting event!

Networking/Information Table
A table will be provided outside the meeting room each month where you can provide any printed materials about events or products you wish to share. Be sure to arrive a little early to place your items on the table. We ask that printed items now be placed on this table, rather than on the dining tables. At the end of the meeting, please pick up and take with you any items that may be left. Our hope is that this will reduce the amount of paper we need to clean up and recycle at the end of our meetings.

"PR means telling the truth and working ethically - even when all the media wants is headlines and all the public wants is scapegoats. Public relations fails when there is no integrity."
