January 2011 -
“Online Reputation Management” with John Whaley, 5wire Marketing, LLC
John Whaley, President and CEO of 5wire Marketing, began his presentation at January’s CRPRA meeting with a couple of significant facts: 75 percent of Americans – and 97 percent of Millennials – are using social media. The number of people using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other online outlets to gather and share information on a daily basis is staggering. As John put it, “social media is word-of-mouth on steroids.” Given that context, his topic – “The Power of Online Reputation Management” – proved highly relevant for the more than 40 communications professionals who attended the meeting.
John offered a few key principles (here in a nutshell) for managing your online reputation:
1. Listen – use tools such as Google Alerts to find out what people are saying about you or your organization.
2. Think first – classify comments as positive, negative or neutral and consider the size of the audience for each before determining appropriate responses.
3. Engage – take the message out of the public space and use personal messaging or calls to invite further conversation with the source.
4. Converse – ask more questions, let unsatisfied people vent.
5. Be genuine and be consistent in your responses.
6. Measure – how much traffic does your blogpost get, how often are you mentioned on Twitter, etc.
7. Dive in – find a starting point for tracking your reputation.
8. Ask for help if you need it.
You can do that by talking to someone like John (john@5wiremarketing.com) or perhaps by attending another enlightening CRPRA meeting.
